BOTOX and Dermal Fillers

	BOTOX BOTOX has been used safely in North America for more than a decade as an effective medical means of reducing wrinkles and smoothing the complexion. BOTOX consists of a purified protein that causes muscles to relax so that the subject is able to stop overusing dominant muscles that cause creases, wrinkles, and deep crevices to form in their face.

BOTOX begins to take effect 48-72 hours after injection, and usually reaches its maximal effect 14 days after being injected. The effects of BOTOX normally last 3-4 months after the first treatment, after which a second treatment is required. After several treatments the effects of BOTOX may last longer than 4 months, and over time the need for those injections often lessens as the subject learns not to overuse the dominant muscles. The short-term and long-term effect of BOTOX treatments differs for each individual.

The overall effect of BOTOX treatments is the restoration of a more refreshed, relaxed look. 	Dermal Fillers Juvéderm is the filler of choice at Dr. Elzette Steyn's Medical Aesthetics and Vein Clinic. Juvéderm contains non-animal-based Hyaluronic Acid, a substance that is naturally occurring in the skin. As we age, our tissues contain less Hyaluronic Acid and Collagen; a group of naturally occurring proteins found in the skin that are the main component of connective tissue.

Hyaluronic Acid has the ability to absorb and hold water, with the effect being that once injected it causes the skin to appear fuller and firm, giving a more youthful, elastic look to the face.

Juvéderm is usually injected into deeper facial lines, the lips, or the cheeks, where it provides a filling and firming effect, thereby leveling lines and restoring some of the sagging features which occur as a result of aging. The effect of Juvéderm can last from 6-9 months, at which time a second treatment can be given to regenerate the effect.
